Can we talk about how Facebook ads are totally useless for local services now?

I manage ads for a small plumbing company in Austin and last week I spent $300 on a Facebook campaign targeting homeowners within 10 miles. Know how many actual leads I got? Zero. Three years ago, the same setup would get me at least 5 calls for that kind of money. Now it feels like Facebook is just pocketing the cash and showing my ad to bots or people in other states. I checked the analytics and saw clicks from places like New York and California, which makes no sense for a local plumber. Has anyone else noticed this shift with local ad targeting or is it just my account getting screwed up?

Facebook changes location targeting settings behind the scenes, so your ad budget gets spread across broader audiences whether you like it or not. They recently switched to "recommended" locations by default which ignores your radius setting without telling you. Did you check if your campaign still had the "people living in this location" option under advanced targeting?
