Critique that pushed me to stop over-rendering every piece

Someone on this forum told me my work looked 'overcooked' and that I was hiding bad composition behind too much detail. I cut my render time in half and started focusing on solid shapes first - anyone else have a blunt comment that actually improved their art?

People REALLY put too much pressure on a single comment like this. Getting told your stuff looks "overcooked" isn't some life changing revelation, it's just one person's opinion. @calebrivera said their lineart looked "nervous" and changed their whole process, but that's kind of dramatic if you ask me. You probably could have figured that out on your own by just stepping back and looking at your work with fresh eyes. Not every piece of feedback needs to be treated like a sacred truth that rewrites your whole style. Sometimes a blunt comment is just a blunt comment, not a wake up call from the universe.

I had a similar moment about two years ago when someone told me my lineart looked "nervous." I used to spend hours adding tiny details trying to fix the shaky lines, but it never looked right. That comment made me realize I was just covering up my lack of confidence with a ton of unnecessary rendering. Now I spend more time planning the composition and shapes before I even start rendering, and my work looks way cleaner. It stings to hear blunt feedback but it really does stick with you in a good way.
