Saw a shop in Phoenix running a dyno test on a 7.3 Powerstroke that had me scratching my head

Stopped by a shop in Phoenix last week and watched them run a dyno test on a 7.3 Powerstroke. They were pushing 450 hp on stock injectors with just tuning and a bigger turbo... The guy said it's been running that way for 18 months without a hiccup. Has anyone else seen these older engines hold up way better than expected with mods like that?

The 7.3s are tanks for sure. Seen plenty of them hit 400+ on stock sticks with just tuning and a 38R or similar turbo, and they just keep going. The real weak point on those trucks is the transmission, not the motor itself. If they upgraded the trans and keep EGTs under control, 450 is totally doable for years without issues.

That pattern holds up in a lot of places, not just old diesel trucks. Your mileage may vary, but it's like those old Honda Civics from the 90s where people slap a turbo on a stock motor and it just goes forever, or the Chevy 4.3 V6s that could handle a supercharger for years without blowing. It's almost like the older stuff was built with a bigger margin for error, whereas new engines are tuned right to the edge from the factory to hit emissions and fuel economy numbers.
