PSA: Keeping a job log made my performance review way smoother

I work at a heavy equipment shop, and we have yearly reviews with management. My tip is to start a basic notebook where you jot down each big repair you do. I note the machine, the fault code, and the fix. When my review came up, I showed my boss the list from the past year. He could see exactly how many tough jobs I handled without callbacks. It made the talk about a raise really straightforward. Now I tell all the new hires to do the same thing. It just takes a minute at the end of the day but pays off big time.

Seems like extra paperwork for no real gain.

Ever notice how many things work like that? Like, @patt63, your point about paperwork for no gain reminds me of the extra forms at the doctor's office that just ask the same info three times. Feels like we're just checking boxes for some system, not actually getting anything done.
