My uncle swore by those old RadioShack scanners for weather alerts - he was right
My uncle Joe out in Oklahoma gave me this advice around 2010. He said get a Realistic Pro-2006 off eBay and a cheap antenna, skip the fancy weather radios. I thought he was being cheap. Put it off for years. Then a tornado warning hit our area in 2023 and my phone alert went off like 5 minutes late. Dusted off his old scanner from storage, plugged it in, and it picked up the NOAA broadcast instantly. Battery was even still good somehow. Anyone else have a piece of dead tech that outlasted the modern replacement?

Five minutes late on a tornado alert sounds terrifying, I would have been furious.

Haven't phone alerts gotten way better in the last couple years though? I feel like the old scanners are neat but they're not showing you radar maps or giving you street-level warnings like a modern app can.
