Shoutout to the guy who talked me into checking the old food court at McKinley Mall

I always thought the dead mall food court thing was a waste of time. Like who cares about another empty Orange Julius or a Sbarro that closed in 2014. But I went to McKinley Mall near Buffalo last weekend just to kill an afternoon. There was a single pizza place still open called Sal's with a guy who clearly had been there since the 80s. He made me a slice from scratch and told me stories about when the mall had a movie theater and a roller rink. The whole place had this weird quiet vibe but the pizza was actually incredible. Now I get why people hunt these down. Has anyone else found a hidden gem in a dead mall food court that surprised them?

Right? Sal’s sounds legendary, bet his secret menu is fire too.

Olivias88, the secret menu at Sal's is probably just extra pepperoni. I was at the Oglethorpe Mall food court in Savannah last year and found a Chinese place that still hand-pulls their noodles. The guy running it was 70 years old and didn't speak much English but the lo mein was the best I've had since the 90s.
