PSA: My router's firmware got silently changed overnight

Last week I noticed my home internet in Phoenix was crawling all of a sudden. I checked my router logs and saw the firmware had been updated without my permission at 3 AM on a Tuesday. The new version added a remote management port that was wide open for anyone to find. Has this happened to anyone else with a Netgear router?

Woke up to that nonsense once and instantly bricked the router out of spite.

Hell yeah that pisses me off. I had the same thing happen with a Netgear modem/router combo a few years back. Woke up to find the thing running some new firmware that added a bunch of crap I never asked for. I tried to roll it back but the router just kept updating itself every night like a stubborn mule. Ended up replacing it with a cheap used one off Craigslist, which honestly felt like trading one headache for another. But hey at least that one hasn't tried to give me a remote management port I didn't ask for. Pretty pathetic when you gotta worry about your own router stabbing you in the back.
