Got hit with a phishing attack at a coffee shop last month in Portland

I was working remote at this spot on Hawthorne and grabbed their guest wifi. Next thing I know my email got popped and someone sent a fake invoice to three of my clients. Now I refuse to use any public network without a VPN and I set up MFA on everything. Anyone else had a close call from something as dumb as free wifi?

Did you check if the coffee shop's wifi was actually their official network or a spoofed one with a similar name? Sometimes the hackers set up their own access point right next to the real one.

olivia573's point about spoofed networks is exactly right. Those fake access points can grab your passwords and credit card info before you even realize you're on the wrong one.
