Customer said my shirt designs looked 'too busy'

I had a client last month who ordered 50 shirts for a 5k run. She told me my layout had too many elements and nobody could read the date from more than 5 feet away. I stripped it down to the logo, the race name, and a single arrow. She came back this week for a reorder and said the simplified version got way more compliments. Has anyone else gotten feedback that forced you to drop half your design?

Why's it always take a complaint to learn what we should've done first?

Right? Isn't it funny how a big stink is the only way anything gets fixed around here? I've been waiting on a simple answer to a simple question for weeks, and one angry email later I get a whole apology and a solution in an hour. Just makes you wonder why we bother asking nicely at all.
