TIL my favorite prompt generator is just a recycled prompt from 2011
I was digging through an old writing forum archive from 2011, and I found a prompt about a detective who can only solve cases by reading people's grocery lists. The exact same prompt showed up on a popular generator site last week, word for word. Some people argue that recycling prompts is fine because every story comes out different anyway, and the core idea is what matters. Others say it's lazy and writers should push for fresh material, not just repackaged content. I used that prompt years ago and wrote a solid story from it, so I get both sides. But when I see the same prompt dressed up as new, it makes me question how much original thinking we're actually doing. Where do you draw the line between borrowing an idea and just copying the prompt? Is it the execution that makes it new, or do we need genuinely new starting points?
