My Craigslist browsing went from 20 tabs a night to one saved search and it killed the fun
Back around 2019 I would sit on my couch in Sacramento and open like 15 tabs a night, random searches for 'free piano' or 'goat' just to see what popped up. Now I run one saved search for a used truck and it shows me the same 6 listings for a month straight. The app keeps pushing me the same beat up Ford Ranger in Elk Grove no matter what I type in. Half the weird ads I used to screenshot are gone, now it's all drop shippers and people wanting $400 for a busted lawnmower. I miss scrolling past a guy selling a haunted doll for $3 and a half eaten sandwich. Is the site actually worse or did they just move all the good weird stuff somewhere else?
The weird stuff is still there, you just have to dig past the algorithm now. Craigslist's search got "smarter" and that's exactly the problem, it decides what you want instead of letting you stumble onto a taxidermy raccoon at 2am. Try searching by city and category instead of keywords, or check the barter and free sections where the real chaos lives. Facebook Marketplace and those local buy nothing groups stole a lot of it too. The haunted doll economy is alive and well, just scattered across five apps now.
