Warning: That guy who 'helps' with your rigging may not know what he's doing

Had a new spotter at a job site in Denver last month, guy named Dave. He kept insisting his shortcuts were fine, like using a choker hitch on a load that clearly needed a basket. Told him to step back and he got defensive, said he'd been doing this for 15 years. Turns out he'd only run a small knuckle boom for a landscaping company, never anything over 5 tons. Has anyone else had to deal with someone who talks a big game but can't read a load chart?

Once I would've brushed it off, but now I get why experience ain't always the real deal.

Yeah that's exactly what I've been circling around lately @rubyj11. Experience can be super convincing just because it's been around a while, but that doesn't mean it's right. Like I used to think someone who had been doing a thing for decades automatically knew best, but now I see how people can just repeat the same mistakes over and over and call it wisdom. It's sort of like how your grandma might swear by a home remedy that's totally useless, you know? There's a difference between having lots of experience and actually learning from it. Still trying to figure out how to tell the two apart in real time though.
