A 30 year guy at the yard in Fresno told me to quit feathering the swing brake, and he was dead right
I was setting steel on a 5 story job and kept easing the brake on every swing instead of letting the handle do the work, so my loads were drifting and the rigger kept waving me off. The old guy walked over and said 'you are fighting the crane, just stop the swing and let it sit', and my next 6 picks were the smoothest I have ever made. Does anyone else here feather the brake out of habit, or did you break it early like I should have?
I feathered that brake for a solid year and called it "being smooth," which is a nice way of saying I was just scared of the load. Took a guy half my age on a smaller job to tell me the same thing and I still acted like I invented the idea.
