I paid $20 for a 'premium' fan site for a 90s cartoon and it was just a GeoCities template with dead GIFs
So about 6 months ago I got really into this old cartoon from the 90s that nobody talks about anymore. I found a fan site for it that was still up, super basic HTML, hit counter, the whole thing. The guy running it had a PayPal link saying $20 got you access to the 'full archive' of episode guides and fan art. I sent the money because I felt bad the site was still running on some ancient server. What I got was a zip file with like 12 broken image links and a text doc that was just copy pasted from a wiki that shut down in 2009. The 'exclusive fan art' was 3 MS Paint drawings of the main character with a lightsaber for some reason. I emailed him twice asking for a refund and got nothing back. The site still loads today and I check it sometimes just to see if he ever updated it. Has anyone else paid real money for something on a dead fan site and instantly regretted it?
Is twenty bucks really worth this much energy though? You got burned, sure, but that's like two coffees and you already said the site still loads, so it's not like the guy vanished with your life savings. Half the fun of old fan sites is that they're held together with duct tape and hope, so paying into one is kind of a gamble by default. The MS Paint lightsaber drawings are honestly pretty funny, you could've gotten way worse for your money. Just treat it as a funny story you tell people instead of a grudge you keep checking up on.
