TIL laser measuring tools are actually worth the money, I was dead wrong about them being a gimmick

I've been doing trim work for about 8 years now and always used a tape measure. Thought those laser distance meters were for interior designers or people who didn't know how to read a tape. Then last week I had to measure out a big living room with 14 foot ceilings for crown molding. Must have gone up and down that ladder 30 times with my tape. My helper had a cheap Bosch laser measure from Amazon and I finally let him use it. He did the whole room in like 4 minutes. I'm getting one this weekend. Has anyone else had a tool they hated on principle but then it made their job way easier?

Man oh man, you hit the nail on the head. I was the same way, been using a tape measure for so long I figured lasers were just a fancy toy for guys who didn't wanna do the work. Then I had to measure a warehouse space for some shelving units, and I was crawling around with a tape getting dust all over me for an hour. Buddy handed me his laser and I had the whole place mapped out in ten minutes flat. Felt like a fool for being so stubborn about it. Those things are a lifesaver when you're working with big spaces or high stuff, no more climbing up and down like a jackrabbit.

Felt like a fool for being so stubborn about it" - that's exactly where I'm at. I was the same guy, swore by my tape and thought lasers were for people who couldn't handle a ladder. But after that crown molding job, my knees were shot and I was still off by an inch on one wall. The laser was dead on and took a fraction of the time. Now I tell the young guys to use them and just feel old about it.
