Ran a chalk line for 9 months before a 19 year old apprentice asked me why my layout pencil was carbide tipped
So I'm framing a duplex out in Mesa last Tuesday and this kid fresh out of a trade program watches me snap lines for a whole morning. Around lunch he asks why my layout pencil is carbide tipped and I say that's just what I grabbed off the shelf, and he goes quiet. Then he points out I've been pressing the line into the wood and rubbing it with my thumb, which smears it a good 1/16 of an inch on rough cut lumber. I grabbed his combo square and checked my last wall and sure enough, my plates were drifting almost a quarter inch over 16 feet by the time I got to the end. He showed me he uses a fine lead and pulls the line once off the hook, no thumb. Nine months of framing and every racked wall I blamed on the lumber, and it was my hand the whole time. Has anybody else had a new guy catch something basic like that, and what was it?
