I started finishing slabs with a $9 squeegee instead of a magnesium float and now I'm not sure which is right
Poured a 20x30 garage slab in Aurora two weeks back and the homeowner kept standing in my way asking about the finish. On a whim I grabbed a cheap 24 inch squeegee I had in the truck and did the whole surface with that instead of my float. It came out way flatter and I only got one hairline crack near the control joint instead of the usual three or four. My old foreman would have fired me on the spot for skipping the float, but the numbers don't lie. Now I'm wondering if the float is just something we do because that's how we were taught. Does anyone here finish straight off the squeegee, or am I about to get roasted for this?

Squeegee first then float just for edges saves you hours.
