That $90 cable tester I bought on a whim just saved a whole office in Phoenix

I was out in Phoenix last month for a temp gig and grabbed a cheap network cable tester for 90 bucks at a pawn shop, mostly for the joke of it. Turned out two of their drop cables were so badly crimped they passed a visual check but failed on pins 4 and 5, which I would've chased for hours without it. Anyone else ever buy a random tool that turned out to be the one you can't live without now?

Grabbed a $20 toner from a garage sale once just because it looked cool, turned out to be the only reason I found a broken line behind a wall that three other guys swore was fine. Now I keep it in my glovebox like it's a lucky charm. Still can't explain why the cheap junk always works better than the fancy stuff I actually paid retail for.
