i used to bookmark every rec thread here, now i just ask my neighbor Dale
For about two years I kept a giant list of every community rec that got posted here, restaurants, plumbers, a guy who fixes lamps, all of it. I had 60 some entries in a spreadsheet and I would scroll it every time I needed something. Then 8 months ago my water heater went out on a Sunday and my neighbor Dale just pointed at a guy three streets over. That guy showed up in 40 minutes and charged me $120 less than the top name on my list. So now I mostly just ask Dale, and honestly his picks have been better than anything I saved from the internet. Last month he sent me to a taco place in a strip mall that this community somehow never mentioned once. I still check here first for bigger stuff, but the spreadsheet has not been opened since March. So my question is, do you trust a neighbor who lives 200 feet away or a stranger on a forum who might live in a different city?
Man, your Dale thing made me laugh because my uncle was basically our family's Dale for years, knew every guy in town who could fix anything. Then he moved two states away and we had to actually figure stuff out ourselves, which went about as well as you'd expect. A neighbor who sees the guy's work every day beats a list every time in my book.
