I wrote off those omnibus editions for years because of the price tag

Finally caved and bought the Miller Daredevil omnibus after seeing it on sale for 40 bucks at a con in Portland and now I get why people drop 100 dollars on those things, the paper quality and extras are actually worth it, anyone else change their mind on a format they swore they'd never buy?

Those blind buys hit different when the paper quality surprises you.

My last blind buy was a beat-up hardcover of a 1970s sci-fi novel and the paper had that faint musty smell mixed with a weird floral perfume from whoever owned it before. It got me thinking about how we don't really get that kind of surprise anymore with new stuff, everything is predictable and safe. Makes you wonder what other small joys we trade away for convenience without even noticing.
