A cashier at my local shop changed how I read old issues

Last Saturday I was grabbing a stack of 90s X-Men at Comic Vault in Austin and the guy at the register asked if I ever flip to the letters page first. He said the fans writing in back then were basically the original internet trolls, and now I can't stop seeing the drama between readers and editors in every back issue. Anyone else start noticing the fan commentary more than the actual storylines?
