Never thought I'd say this but I stopped dialing in espresso by weight
A barista at my local shop in Portland told me I was overthinking it. I was obsessive about hitting 18.0 grams every time, and she pointed out my timing was off by 2 seconds because of it. Now I just go by volume in the basket and adjust taste from there, and honestly my shots are way more consistent. Has anyone else stopped weighing every single dose?

Oh great, another thing to buy. Precision baskets are just another way for the internet to tell me I'm doing everything wrong with my life. Next thing you know someone's gonna tell me I need a $400 tamper to not screw up my morning coffee. Maybe I'll just use a mason jar lid to tamp and see if that starts a trend.

Volume in the basket? Like how much space it takes up after you tamp? That's interesting but seems like different beans would pack differently. What kind of basket are you using, a standard one or one of those precision ones from VST or IMS? Genuinely curious if that matters as much as everyone says for this method.
