Old timer told me to stop using coolant on aluminum... he was right about that one thing

Worked with a guy named Frank who'd been running mills since the 70s. He kept telling me to ditch the flood coolant when cutting 6061 aluminum and just use air blast. I ignored him for like 6 months because it went against everything I learned in school. Finally tried it on a batch of 50 parts and my tool life doubled. The chips don't weld to the cutter anymore. Anyone else have a crusty old operator give you advice that sounds backwards but actually works?

Frank with the 70s era mills? That's wild. I had a guy tell me to stop using coolant on brass once and I thought he was crazy. He was right too, the stuff would gum up and turn into paste without it. I still catch myself second guessing when someone who's been doing this since before I was born gives me advice. They've seen it all break and fixed it with whatever was laying around. You just gotta trust them sometimes.

Isn't that just how old dudes always beat modern wisdom?
