Had a week where everything that could go wrong DID go wrong on the manual lathe

Last Tuesday I crashed a brand new 3/4" carbide endmill into a vise jaw because I forgot to zero out my Z-axis after a tool change, then Friday my coolant pump died mid-cycle on a $2,000 titanium job. Has anyone else had one of those weeks where you just want to walk away from the machine for a few days?

Yeah the "forgot to zero out" thing hits close to home. I did that once and ended up with a brand new insert embedded in the chuck. It might help to start a checklist right after you finish a job. Jot down the little stuff like zeroing axes and checking coolant levels before you walk away from the machine.

Respectfully @matthew_baker, checklists work great for the shop floor but that kind of habit can slip fast when you're running multiple jobs in a day. Better to build muscle memory instead of relying on a piece of paper you might leave on the toolbox. Spend a week drilling yourself to zero out before you even reach for the next tool and it'll stick way harder than any checklist.
