Blown $260 insert order on a 2 inch math slip

Last Tuesday I was programming a 20 part run for a local shop in Toledo. I typed the wrong tool offset into the controller. Didn't catch it until spindle three had already chewed through 12 carbide inserts. My foreman just stared at the chips and said, 'well, that's a pricey typo.' Have you ever had a single number sink a whole shift? How do you double check offsets without slowing down?

Aw man, that really stings. I felt that one in my gut, because I've been there with a fat-fingered number and watched the machine just eat money while you stand there helpless. For offsets, I started saying the number out loud before I hit enter, plus I'll punch it in twice and compare the two entries, sounds dumb but it catches most of my slips. The real kicker is when you're in a hurry because the job is behind, that's exactly when the typo happens. Hang in there, and don't let the foreman's stare get to you, we've all paid tuition at that school.
