inJust realized I was overcomplicating my paint prep for years
Remember reading old paint can labels that always said to use soap. Turns out that advice was for oil based paints, which almost nobody uses on walls anymore. Modern latex paint sticks to a different surface, and soap can leave a film that messes with the bond. The switch in paint chemistry made a lot of old prep steps pointless.

inA new guy on a site in Phoenix asked me why I always do a full 360 walk-around before I even start the engine.
Was it actually a cracked tie-down plate or the pad it sits on? Because a cracked plate itself is wild, but a bad base under it is the usual culprit. That's the real lesson about checking the ground.

inTried using a car battery charger on a stuck elevator in a St. Louis parking garage
Learned my lesson the hard way too, @the_cora. Swapped a power supply without checking the voltage switch. That magic smoke smell is unforgettable. Now I triple-check every connection before I hit the power. A cheap multimeter from the hardware store saved me a few times after that.

inShoutout to the old guy who showed me a trick with a zip tie on a fridge door
Yeah, I read a forum post once where someone fixed a wobbly washing machine by shimming under one corner with a stack of old CDs... the weight distribution was just off by a tiny bit. It ran smooth for years after that. Makes you wonder how many service calls are for stuff that just needs a little creative thinking and not a new part.

inShowerthought: Finally got around to hanging my hoof testers and pincers on the wall. No more digging through the toolbox every morning.
Sounds like a regular job to me. People hang up their work tools all the time, it's just being tidy. Calling it "serious dedication" is a bit much.
