Why does nobody talk about washing clothes in cold water vs hot?
I used to run every load on hot because that is what my mom did and I figured it killed germs, but our gas bill in January came to $94 which felt nuts for two people. So I switched everything except towels and sheets to cold water for about 6 weeks and the bill dropped to $71. The weird part is the clothes came out just as clean, and the colors on my old band shirts stopped fading so fast. Hot water is mostly heating energy, and heating water is a lot of what your washer pulls from the grid. I still do towels on warm because the cold cycle leaves them feeling stiff. Has anyone found a cold cycle that actually gets grease out of work clothes, or am I stuck pretreating forever?
Went from $94 to $71 in January and you credit the switch to cold water? January was also way warmer in most of the country this year, my gas bill dropped $20 and I changed nothing at all. That $23 could just be the furnace running less, not the washer. I would want to see the same numbers across a full year before I call it a real fix.
