Coffee shop stranger changed how I think about plastic waste
Last month I was grabbing a coffee at a local shop in Portland and a guy behind me noticed I had brought my own reusable cup. He said 'good for you' and then told me he works at a recycling facility. He explained that most plastic coffee cup lids can't actually be recycled because they're too small and fall through the sorting machines. That stuck with me because I always thought I was doing the right thing by putting them in the recycling bin. Now I bring my own cup every time and it saves me 10 cents too. Has anyone else learned something similar about what actually gets recycled?

Plastic lids are a scam, just bring your own cup.

Three years I worked as a barista and I never even thought about the lids... I'd toss em in the recycling with a little pat on my own back. Guess I was just a dummy with a good conscience.
