The week my 1965 Mustang left me stranded twice in one day
So last Tuesday I drove my 65 Mustang to the hardware store and it died right in the parking lot. Turned out my points gap had closed up on me, which I should have checked sooner. Got it running with a matchbook trick, drove home, and then on Wednesday the same thing happened, this time on I-70 near Columbus. I was out there for 2 hours waiting on a tow. I replaced the points and condenser that weekend, set the gap to .017, and it has been fine since. But now I'm second guessing everything on that ignition system. Has anyone else had points close up that fast, or is something else going on?

I read somewhere that a worn distributor shaft bushing can make the gap wander because the shaft wobbles. Might be worth grabbing the shaft and checking for play side to side. Also making sure the points rubbing block got a dab of grease so it doesn't wear down fast.
