PSA: Check your closing costs line by line, I got burned by a $2,800 fee that should have been zero

I closed on a house in Matthews back in February and was just reviewing my settlement statement last week. There was a $2,800 'administration fee' tucked in there that I never questioned at signing. My realtor friend looked at it and said that's almost always a junk fee the lender adds as pure profit. I called up the mortgage company and they said it was standard, but then they couldn't explain what it actually covered. After I pushed, they refunded $1,200. Has anyone else had luck getting these fees waived before signing?

My buddy found a $900 "processing fee" hidden in his refi docs too.

Did he catch it before closing, or did they try to sneak it past after he already signed everything?
