That $80 power stretcher I bought secondhand still haunts me

I mean, I get the appeal of saving money on used gear, but this thing had a bent handle that I didn't catch until I was mid-install in a 12x14 bedroom in Austin. It kept slipping and I had to redo a whole seam, which cost me about 3 hours and a pissed-off customer. Maybe it's just me, but is the risk of buying used tools ever actually worth it when a new one is only a few hundred more? Has anyone else gotten burned by a bargain that ended up costing more in the long run?
