Rant: stretched a bedroom in a rush and nipped the baseboard corner in Lincoln Park
Was power stretching a 12x14 bedroom on a Friday afternoon in Lincoln Park and the knee kicker slipped right into the baseboard, cracking about 3 inches of the miter. I filled it with wood putty and touched it up with a stain pen so it passed the walkthrough, but the homeowner noticed two days later anyway. How do you all keep the kicker from walking into trim on tight walls?
Running the kicker at an angle (like 30 degrees off the wall) instead of flat gets you power without the pad digging in and skating. I also tape a scrap of 1/4 inch ply or a piece of underlayment against the base as a backstop, so if the head slips it hits wood instead of paint. Takes an extra minute to set up but saves you a callback and a stain pen cover-up. The putty trick works for a walkthrough but it shrinks after a few days, which is probably how the homeowner spotted it.
