Cutting stretched carpet is a trap I fell into for 3 years

I used to always cut carpet while it was still under heavy tension from the power stretcher, thinking it'd save time. Then I had a 300 square foot job in Dallas where every seam butted up perfectly until I released the stretcher and got quarter-inch gaps everywhere. Has anyone else switched to cutting only after you relax the tension or am I just late to the obvious?

Honestly that's just one of those lessons you gotta learn the hard way I guess.

Did you ever have one of those jobs where you think you've got it all figured out and then the carpet fights back? I had a similar situation in a condo once, but with a twist. I cut it under tension, let it loose, and the gaps showed up like clockwork. But here's the weird part - the homeowner walked in and said the gaps made it look "more rustic" and asked if I could add a few more. Never been so confused in my life.
