Old timer told me I was cutting my dovetails too tight and wasting material, and after I loosened up my layout by 1/16 inch I started finishing jobs faster with fewer mistakes

He said 'you're fighting the wood, not working with it' and now I actually have room for glue squeeze-out without splitting the pins - anyone else get called out on a bad habit from someone with 40 years in the trade?

My experience is that old timers rarely give bad advice. Might be worth trying on your next project just to see.

Yeah, I had a foreman who was 25 years in the trade. He told me to always keep a separate coffee can of tiny concrete screws and washers in my truck. Saved me at least three times on weekends when the hardware stores were closed and I needed just one specific size. It sounds dumb but the little stuff like that is exactly what those guys know.
