My apprentice asked why I still square things with a framing square instead of a laser and his follow-up question really got me thinking

He just said 'but your cuts are still off sometimes, why not make it easier?' and I realized I've been defending old tools just because they're old, not necessarily better. Has anyone else switched to something new and felt like a hypocrite after?

Your cuts are still off sometimes" is the part that gets me. A laser won't fix a bad eye for layout or a shaky hand on the saw. I see it as having a backup that works without batteries or a screen. Tools are just tools, the skill is in knowing how and when to use each one right.

You ever mess up so bad with a laser that you gotta blame the batteries just to feel better? Because I've done that more times than I care to admit. @craig.reese is right, the tool doesn't fix the shaky hand - which is why my apprentice still watches me square up twice before every cut, just out of habit.
