Update: Watched a Waterloo startup demo their pitch at a Kitchener meetup last Tuesday and the Q&A taught me more than the pitch
I went to a startup meetup in Kitchener last Tuesday because a friend from my gym invited me. About 40 people showed up in a room above a coffee shop on King Street. A founder from Waterloo pitched her logistics software for 5 minutes and it was fine, nothing flashy. But then the Q&A ran 40 minutes and the questions were way sharper than the pitch itself. One guy asked how she landed her first 3 customers and she admitted 2 of them came from her old boss at a trucking company she worked at for 6 years. That made me think most early Canadian startups probably grow from who you already know, not from demo day buzz. For those of you who have been to these meetups around Waterloo or Toronto, is the Q&A usually the real value or did I just get lucky with this one?
Man, that first customer story is the most honest thing I've heard about startup life in a while. It gets me a little because it makes you wonder how many good founders never even get in the room without those connections.
