The coffee shop chat in Waterloo that made me rethink how I hire
Back in 2019 I was at a coffee shop in Waterloo with a guy who had just sold his second startup. I was complaining about how hard it was to find good developers for my small team, and he just laughed and asked me how many people I had actually met in person that month. I said maybe three. He told me he got his first five hires by hanging around the same coffee shop every Tuesday and Thursday for six weeks, just talking to people. I tried it for a month and ended up hiring two folks who are still with me. Has anyone else had luck with the slow in person approach instead of job boards?
