My accountant in Kitchener told me to stop calling my side project a startup, and I think she saved me $6k
I've been grinding on a little SaaS tool for Shopify stores since January and finally sat down with a bookkeeper in Kitchener to sort out my taxes. She flat out said "this isn't a startup, it's a side hustle, and you're burning cash on tools you don't need yet." It stung because I'd been telling everyone I was building a startup, but she walked me through my actual numbers and I was spending $6k a year on stuff a pre-revenue project has no business paying for. Curious if anyone else got that same reality check early on, and how you figured out when it actually made sense to scale up the spending?
