My buddy Rick swore by those cheap foam sleeping pads...

We were out near Lost Lake last weekend and he told me to ditch my inflatable for a $15 foam pad. Said it would never pop. Well, I woke up at 3am with a rock the size of a fist digging into my back and couldn't get back to sleep. Anyone else given up on saving weight just to avoid a flat mattress?

Wait, a rock the size of a fist? That's crazy man. I slept on those cheap foam pads for years when I was starting out and never hit anything that bad. You sure your buddy didn't just want to watch you suffer for fun? Those pads are basically just a thin layer of hope between you and the ground. I get not wanting to deal with a leak, but I'd rather patch a hole twice a year than wake up feeling like I got jumped by a bag of rocks.

Wait, is your buddy still talking to you after that? That rock story is brutal, and honestly I've seen some sketchy ground situations but a fist-sized rock is on another level. @xena_taylor64 I feel you on the cheap pads, they're a gamble every single night. I had one that wore through at the hip after like three trips, and I spent a whole summer waking up with gravel imprints in my back. Patch and pray is my motto too, but I keep a small tarp under mine just in case, cause that ground is not forgiving.
