That time my nephew laughed at my campfire cooking setup

I was up at Lake George last summer with my brother's family, and I was so proud of my old cast iron skillet setup over the fire. My 16 year old nephew just stood there watching me fiddle with logs for 20 minutes trying to get the heat right. He finally said 'Uncle Fiona, just dig a smaller fire pit and put the grate lower. Makes it easier to control the heat.' I was a bit embarrassed at first but he was totally right. I had been using this big deep fire pit for years because that's how my dad taught me. Now I dig a shallow pit about 8 inches deep and it takes half the time to get consistent coals. Anyone else had a younger person point out something obvious you'd been missing for years?

Uncle Fiona" made me laugh but honestly I prefer a deeper pit for keeping ash from blowing everywhere.

Shallow pit works better for grilling but a deeper one with a windbreak of rocks helps when the weather kicks up... adapt the setup for the conditions.
