That bear canister rule at Glacier made me rethink my whole packing system

Last August at Glacier I got cited for keeping a small bag of trail mix in my tent pocket. Ranger was cool about it, just a warning, but it got me thinking about how much we rely on convenience over safety. Some people argue bear canisters are overkill outside designated zones, and I used to agree. But after seeing the actual claw marks on a rental camper's door near Many Glacier, I'm leaning toward strict rules every time. Anyone else have a close call that flipped their opinion on something like this?

Claw marks on a rental camper door? Jesus. I’d have packed my canister with my wallet and phone before I slept another night out there. That’s the kind of thing that makes you realize rules aren’t about being a jerk, they’re about not becoming a headline.
