Ran into a guy at Glacier National Park who swore by sleeping with his food in the tent
He said bears are smart enough to smell through dry sacks anyway and he'd rather have a bear rip his tent open than his pack, and I still don't know which side is actually smarter on this - anyone else heard arguments for both?

Three separate bear encounters in the Tetons taught me to always hang my food.

Wait, are you seriously considering sleeping with food in your tent? That guy is absolutely wrong about bear noses, those animals can smell a granola wrapper from a mile away no matter what bag it's in. The whole point of a bear canister or hanging your food is NOT about smell proofing, it's about keeping a physical barrier between the bear and your food so it can't get a reward and learn to associate people with meals. I'd rather have my pack ripped open 50 feet from where I'm sleeping than have a 400 pound grizzly decide my tent is a vending machine while I'm zipped up in a bag.
