My worst camping trip ever was last fall when I brought the wrong tent stakes for the hard-packed ground at Joshua Tree.

I spent two hours trying to get the thing to stand up in 20 mph winds before a guy in the next site loaned me his heavy-duty steel ones, so what's your go-to stake for rocky or super firm soil?

Man, that sounds brutal. I've been there with the wrong stakes. For that kind of ground, I just use the thickest steel ones I can find, the kind you really have to hammer in.

Thick steel can just bend in that stuff. Ever try the spiral anchors instead?
