I finally tried cowboy camping under the stars in Joshua Tree and it was a total disaster.
I left my tent in the car thinking a sleeping bag and pad would be enough for a clear night. Around 2 AM, the wind picked up so hard it blew my bag off the pad and covered everything, including me, in a thick layer of fine desert sand. I spent the next hour just trying to keep the grit out of my eyes and mouth. Has anyone else tried a no-tent night in a place that seemed calm but turned wild?

That "clear-sky" story reminds me of the time a sudden rainstorm soaked me and my sleeping bag in Arizona.
