Pro tip: lube the film advance on a Canonet before you ship it, or the buyer will send you a cursed photo
Honestly I picked up a Canonet QL17 at the Alameda Point flea market for $30 last month and the advance lever felt like a rusty hinge, so I put a drop of sewing machine oil on the shaft and worked it about 20 times until it snapped smooth as butter. Two days later I got a message from the guy I sold it to with a photo attached, and the shot was just a blurry close up of the camera sitting on his kitchen counter, he said the lever locked up solid and he wanted his money back. Turns out I oiled the top of the shaft where it just sat there and gummed up the ratchet pawl that actually needs to stay dry, so I had to strip the top plate off and clean out my own mess with a q tip and lighter fluid. What got me was the photo itself, that blurry shot was somehow tack sharp in the top left corner and it had a little note written in the background that said good luck with this thing. I drove over to his place in Oakland, fixed it in his garage in about 15 minutes, and we ended up talking about old rangefinders for an hour. Has anyone else had a buyer send back a photo that felt like a warning from the camera itself?
