Can we talk about setting infinity focus with the lens wide open
I spent years collimating lenses with the aperture stopped down to f/5.6 because that's how the old guy at the shop in Dallas trained me back in 2011. Last week I had a 50mm f/1.4 on the bench that looked perfect at 5.6 but was way off at 1.4, and the customer caught it on a star shot. Turns out the focus shift was hiding the error the entire time, and I had been shipping lenses out the door slightly off for a decade. Now I check every lens wide open first and only stop down to confirm. Any of you check focus at max aperture or do you trust the old method?
