A trick with a rubber band saved a stuck film advance lever on a Canon AE-1

I had a customer bring in an AE-1 last week where the film advance lever was totally frozen, wouldn't budge at all. I was about to start a full teardown, but I remembered an old timer saying to check the bottom plate ratchet first. I put a thick rubber band around the lever for extra grip, gave it a firm but careful twist counter-clockwise, and it popped free. The ratchet spring was just gummed up with old grease. Has anyone else had luck with this before going deeper into the mechanism?

That trick with the rubber band is a great first step.

Did you try cleaning the old grease out after it popped free, @hannahs71?
