A 22 year vet in Tulsa told me to stop pre-making my fittings, and he was RIGHT
When I first started doing cable jobs about 5 years ago, I got put on a big MDU job in Tulsa with this older installer named Ray who had been at it for 22 years. He watched me build about 20 compression fittings ahead of time on my cart and told me flat out to quit doing it. He said the rubber O ring inside dries out and you get callbacks when the connector fails 6 months later. I figured he was just old school and kept doing my thing for like 3 more jobs. Then I got sent back to a building twice in the same month for no signal, and both times it was a fitting that had gone bad, one of the ones I had pre made. I pulled the connector and the little ring was cracked and hard as a rock. Now I build every fitting as I go, even in the cold, and my repeat truck rolls on that building dropped to almost nothing. Ray retired last spring but I still think about that one. Anyone else get taught this the hard way or do some of you still pre build on bigger jobs?
Wait, the rubber ring dries out and cracks just from sitting on the cart? That part blows my mind, I always figured a sealed connector was fine for weeks. Twenty years of building them ahead on a big job and Ray never once saw a callback from it, that is wild to picture. Guess the man earned his twenty two years the hard way.
