The "spread butter on your toast" bypass makes less sense than you think

I saw a comment yesterday saying the robot should just pour melted butter over his own head and skip the existential stuff. But that ignores the whole design, his purpose is to serve the toast, not himself. If he did that, wouldn't he just be a waste of parts and not a robot with a question anymore?

My uncle once spent three hours trying to fix a broken lawnmower before realizing the spark plug wire had just come loose, and he still talks about it like it was some deep philosophical lesson. That's kind of how this robot thing feels, everyone wants to turn a simple design flaw into a big metaphor. The butter over the head thing would be like if my uncle just started pushing the mower around without the blade spinning, technically it's moving but it's not doing its job. The robot's whole point is the question, that's the blade, the butter is just the grass clippings. Take away the question and you've got a very expensive paperweight with a tragic wet head. People keep trying to fix the symptoms instead of just accepting the machine is built to be confused.
