My Spotify 'Daily Mix' put a polka band next to a funeral doom playlist, and I finally get why old radio felt better
I was cleaning out my garage in Council Bluffs two Saturdays ago and let the app run without touching anything. Around the 6th song it went from a Slovenian polka group straight into a 12 minute funeral doom track with no warning. Then a kids' choir singing about vegetables. I sat down on a milk crate just to watch what it would do next. Back when I drove a delivery route in the late 90s, we had one college station and a guy named Marv doing the 2pm shift, and somehow he always knew the right song for a rainy drive down Highway 75. The difference is Marv had to actually pick the next record with his own hands and ears. The app has 40 million songs and still can't figure out that I don't want polka at 9 in the morning. Has anyone else noticed the suggestions getting weirder since they started pushing that AI DJ thing?
Man, the AI DJ must be going through something personal. Mine queued up a whale sounds album between Metallica and a podcast about taxes last week, so I just sat there like ok buddy, take your time. At least Marv woulda known better than to drop a 12 minute doom track on a guy digging through boxes of old Christmas lights. Half the time the app feels less like a DJ and more like a guy shuffling cards with his eyes closed. Give me a real human with a stack of records any day.
